A good contest does not need props – it needs a mechanic that the whole room joins. Here are proven mechanics that run without purchases, without preparation and without dragging anyone onto the stage. Plus an honest section on when contests are better not run at all.
Table mechanics
Chain story. The host starts a short story with one sentence. Each next guest adds one sentence, going around the table or room. After 5–7 minutes the story becomes absurd and funny. Timing 5 minutes. Requires nothing but attention.
Guess the person. The host thinks of a real person from the company (or a fictional one). Guests ask only yes/no questions. Whoever guesses continues. 4–6 minutes. Works great at tables and involves even quiet people.
Rhythm relay. The host sets a simple rhythm by clapping on the table or with hands. Each next person repeats it and adds their own element. The rhythm gets more complex until it breaks. 3–5 minutes. Physical and fun without words.
Whole-room mechanics
Pass the story around. Every guest in turn adds one detail to a collective story (about colleagues or a made-up hero). The host writes it down or remembers. At the end the result is read out. 6–8 minutes. Guaranteed laughter.
What do they have in common. The host picks two random guests (or departments). The room has one minute to come up with as many common things as possible. The most unexpected answers win. 4 minutes. Great for bringing out creativity with zero prep.
My neighbour on the left. Each guest quickly tells one funny or unusual fact about the person to their left. Then the neighbours confirm or deny. 5–7 minutes. Simple mechanic that works well with long tables.
When contests do not work
A third of any room are introverts. When the host pulls people onto the stage to the microphone, they get embarrassed, refuse or do it under duress. Everyone else yawns and waits for it to end. Contests that require going on stage work against the atmosphere, not for it.
If there are more than 50 people in the room and you are not sure everyone wants to be the centre of attention – do not run classic contests with props and stage exits. Better to use mechanics where a person stays at the table and participates by raising a phone.
Finale where everyone participates at once
Light finale: guests scan a QR, raise their phones, and the whole hall becomes one picture. Nobody goes on stage, everyone participates – from the first to the last row. Controlled by the host or DJ. From 10,000 ₽ per evening. Works in any hall.
After the show everyone gets a draw and chat in their phone. This is an extra bonus at no additional cost. More in the team building article and the Corporate events and weddings section.
